Established in 1992, Mekong Development Bank (MDB) was previously known as My Xuyen Commercial Joint Stock Bank. Since its inception, the bank has established a strong foothold in the An Giang province with a strong focus on agricultural loans. In 2008, the bank obtained approval from the State Bank of Vietnam to expand its operations nationwide. In line with its expansion plans, the bank was renamed Mekong Development Bank in 2009 and started to expand into the Mekong Delta region.
2010 was a watershed year for the bank when it entered into a strategic partnership with Fullerton Financial Holdings, a wholly owned subsidiary of Temasek Holdings. The strategic partnership increased its chartered capital to USD 150 Million and introduced the bank to international banking practices. This opened a new chapter in the bank's expansion plans and together with its strategic partner, the bank started to revamp its operations and upgrade its systems in all areas to put in place a solid foundation to support its growth ambitions. It also saw the bank introducing new businesses targeted at new market segments.
In 2011 the bank opened its Hanoi branch, its first in the north and as it moves forward, MDB is expected to continue expanding its network throughout the country. It remains on course with its expansion plan and growth targets and is poised to be a major player in the Vietnam market.
